[0:24] that

[0:26] is a polypore mushroom that means it has

[0:30] pores under the bottom my wife likes to

[0:33] call it polypore or Paul Stamos I think

[0:35] that's cute

[0:36] um and this is a bracket fungus and this

[0:39] mushroom has some active constituents

[0:42] that can help the immune system we're

[0:45] growing thousands of blocks as we call

[0:49] or this mushroom and where we've been

[0:51] working with the steer medical school

[0:52] and now the University of Washington

[0:54] Medical School

[0:55] specifically to test extraction methods

[0:58] and also the stage of the life cycle of

[1:01] these mushrooms this is the very end of

[1:03] the life cycle

[1:04] with the for the mushrooms to form

[1:06] there's many challenges on the mycilial

[1:09] path before the mushrooms would form so

[1:12] we want to examine the extracellular

[1:14] metabolites of the mycelium versus doing

[1:17] hot water extracts of the mushrooms so

[1:22] and there are many coincidences in life

[1:24] and this mushroom came from an

[1:26] interesting coincidence uh this is our

[1:28] turkey tail mushroom that was used in a

[1:31] NIH funded study for helping the immune

[1:34] system of people and this mushroom

[1:36] actually came from an event uh Dr Andrew

[1:39] Weil Andy as I call him is my best

[1:41] friend and he was swinging on a hammock

[1:43] when my kids were three or four years of

[1:45] age and they were on top of him and they

[1:46] were swinging having lots of fun and

[1:48] suddenly the hammock was that was being

[1:51] suspended by an apple tree branch to the

[1:53] apple tree branch Broken Oh and he went

[1:56] thought under the ground knocked the

[1:57] wind out of them sorry about that but

[1:58] the kids had a good time and then I took

[2:01] the branch and I threw it off to the

[2:02] side and six months later what happened

[2:05] turkey tail mushrooms came out of the

[2:07] branch so I cloned those turkey tail

[2:09] mushrooms from the apple tree branch and

[2:12] these are the very ones that are used

[2:13] now in our clinical studies kind of fun
