Wisdom Healing Qigong approaches chronic pain—whether in the neck, lower back, or joints—not as a mechanical problem but as blocked energy (qi) that disrupts communication between the nervous system, muscles, and spine. Rather than avoiding movement due to pain, qigong practitioners use slow, intentional movements coordinated with breath and visualization to restore energy flow, rebuild flexibility, and heal the underlying energetic cause rather than merely masking symptoms. Two specific practices—the neck opening sequence and the low back rotation—demonstrate how gentle, mindful movement can safely activate healing even when acute pain is present.

What Causes Chronic Pain From an Energetic Perspective?

In Wisdom Healing Qigong, pain is understood as a symptom of blocked or stagnant energy within the body. Master Mingtong Gu distinguishes between acute pain (caused by direct injury, surgery, or trauma) and chronic pain—the kind that persists long after an initial injury should have healed. Chronic pain often stems from accumulated energetic stress in the body, shaped by posture, overwork, mental stress, and emotional tension. Even when the body appears to have recovered from surgery or injury, a deep energetic blockage can linger, manifesting years later as pain in the knees, hips, shoulders, ankles, or spine.

The energetic perspective emphasizes that all communication within the body—between the nervous system, muscle tissue, and spine—is fundamentally energy flow. When this flow is obstructed, the body's internal communication breaks down. Over time, this accumulated discomfort and stress manifests as pain. Unlike approaches that treat pain as purely mechanical (a pinched nerve or muscle tightness), qigong recognizes pain as an expression of energetic stagnation that can be reversed by restoring the flow of qi.

Why Does Avoiding Movement Make Chronic Pain Worse?

A common response to pain is to reduce movement or freeze the affected area. However, Mingtong Gu explains that this strategy backfires energetically. When we stop moving due to fear of pain, the energy in that region continues to stagnate and become more blocked. Over time, the condition worsens rather than heals. The cause—the underlying energetic blockage—remains unaddressed, and the tissue loses the benefit of movement and circulation.

Qigong offers an alternative: move intentionally and gently despite the pain. By engaging in slow, mindful movement that respects the body's current capacity, practitioners can begin to open the energy flow in the affected area without triggering further injury. This is the paradox of energy-based healing: gentle, purposeful movement can accomplish what rest and avoidance cannot.

How Does the Neck Opening Movement Work?

The neck is a critical junction in the body—it connects the brain to the entire spine, the nervous system, the respiratory system, and even the digestive system. Neck pain or stiffness often signals problems in other parts of the body, as the neck functions as a kind of body map where different regions' health issues can manifest. Opening the energy of the neck can therefore influence healing throughout the entire system.

The neck opening practice involves a simple but precise movement: starting from standing, tuck the chin slowly and gradually, then lift it upward. Continue this movement by tilting the chin forward and down, then reversing direction to open the back of the neck, moving the chin backward and upward. The movement is continuous, fluid, and slow—the intention is to gradually open both the front and back of the neck with each repetition.

Key principles of this practice:

  • Initiate from the base. The movement originates from the energy center (dantian) and the chin, not from forcing the head or neck muscles.
  • Move slowly and continuously. There are no jerky motions; the practice is a flowing, deliberate movement repeated as many times as needed.
  • Feel the opening. The practitioner should mentally connect with the sensation of the front of the neck opening forward and downward, and the back of the neck opening backward and upward.
  • Repeat and rest. After completing several cycles, relax and notice the internal shifts—often a sense of ease, warmth, or tingling in the neck area.

Beyond pain relief, this movement increases flexibility in the cervical spine, which has far-reaching effects: it slows and steadies the nervous system, allows deeper breathing through improved respiratory pathways, and supports the digestive system, which passes through the throat. Regular practice of this movement can prevent future neck problems and enhance overall health.

How Does the Low Back Rotation Practice Address Lower Back Pain?

The lower back is another area where chronic pain accumulates, often from poor posture, sitting for extended periods, or emotional stress held as physical tension. Unlike the neck sequence, the low back practice can be done while sitting, making it accessible even when acute pain is present.

The practice involves a gentle, slow rotation of the lower back in small circles. The practitioner sits upright and, with focused attention, rotates the lower back horizontally, creating small circular movements. The key is to maintain deep concentration, slow the movement, and soften it if pain intensity increases. The rotation is then reversed, completing the circular motion.

The practice should be repeated as often as needed, with emphasis on:

  • Gentle intention. The movement is never forced; it is always within a comfortable range and performed with the purpose of opening energy, not stretching muscles.
  • Deep mental focus. Mingtong Gu emphasizes that mind concentration is essential to activate and open the energy. Without mindful attention, the practice becomes merely physical stretching.
  • Patience with intensity. In the beginning, practitioners may feel some discomfort or intensity. This is normal and does not mean the practice is harmful. Over time, as energy opens and begins to flow, the intensity diminishes.

The low back rotation can also be extended to involve the entire spine, rotating the entire torso horizontally to activate energy throughout the spinal column. As with the neck practice, the goal is to free up blocked energy, restore communication between the spine and nervous system, and reduce muscle tension.

What Happens as Energy Begins to Flow?

When energy practices are done consistently and mindfully, several shifts occur. In the beginning, practitioners may feel some level of discomfort or intensity in the affected area—this is the energy beginning to move through previously blocked regions. As the practice continues, energy flow increases, and the body's internal communication improves. The nervous system, muscle tissue, and spine begin to work together more efficiently.

As pain diminishes and energy opens up, something equally important happens: that freed-up energy becomes available for healing, creativity, and life vitality. Rather than being trapped in stagnation and pain, energy is now mobilized for the body's overall health and functioning. This is why qigong views pain not merely as something to eliminate, but as a signal that energy needs to be awakened and redirected throughout the body.

Can These Practices Be Done Alongside Other Therapies?

Mingtong Gu emphasizes that Wisdom Healing Qigong is complementary to professional medical care, not a replacement for it. Before beginning any qigong practice—especially when chronic pain is present—practitioners should consult with their healthcare provider. The practices are gentle, adaptable, and can be modified for different comfort levels and physical conditions. They can be performed sitting, standing, or lying down, and can be integrated alongside physical therapy, chiropractic care, or other healing modalities.

The advantage of qigong is that it works at the energetic and nervous system level while simultaneously improving flexibility and strength. This multi-layered approach addresses both the immediate discomfort and the underlying cause.

Where to go from here

If you experience chronic neck or lower back pain, begin with just 5–10 minutes of either the neck opening or low back rotation practice, depending on where your pain is located. Move slowly, keep your attention focused on the sensation of energy opening in that area, and perform the practice daily if possible. Notice what shifts internally—increased warmth, ease of movement, changes in sensation. Over weeks and months of consistent practice, many practitioners report significant reduction in pain and a restored sense of physical capability and vitality. For more comprehensive qigong instruction, consult the Chi Center's online courses and resources, and always work with a qualified healthcare provider if pain is severe or acute.

[0:07] hello a mass minting goo in this video

[0:12] looking to speak about how to use wisdom

[0:15] healing going to help neck pain or low

[0:20] back pain or pain in general so to speak

[0:23] in the energetic perspective wisdom

[0:26] Healing chicken we understand the deeps

[0:29] the cause of all issue health issue

[0:32] emotional issue including mental issue

[0:34] is energy when energy is blocked the

[0:39] functioning of the physical body

[0:40] emotional body even mental body is

[0:43] compromised so one of the expression of

[0:46] the energy blockages is pain is pain so

[0:50] the pain and I'm speaking of cornica

[0:53] pain not a cure pain caused by injury by

[0:56] Kurds things like that I'm speaking of

[0:59] whom the chronic pain often sometime

[1:04] calm the go but overall it's there for a

[1:07] long time already so it's really about

[1:11] accumulative energetic stress of the

[1:15] body caused by you know posture

[1:18] overworking mental stress also causes

[1:22] the emotional stress and the physical

[1:24] stress even paying as well and also can

[1:27] cause by other unions even also injury

[1:31] when you mainly cover relatively ok from

[1:35] injuries slow surgeries or other kind of

[1:38] therapy but a deep energetic may be

[1:40] compromised then years later you

[1:43] experiencing pain in your knees in your

[1:46] hip joints in your shoulders your ankles

[1:49] or you know different part of your spine

[1:52] so long so overall we understand the

[1:57] energy prodigious is causing the pain

[2:00] and including if the nerve system is off

[2:04] then the energy is not flowing well so

[2:08] by going to the energy you can reverse

[2:12] the condition on one hand you know the

[2:15] energetic communication inside of you

[2:18] slow the nerve systems

[2:20] of the muscle tissue even your spine is

[2:24] is important and underline that

[2:28] communication is also energy flow so

[2:31] when the energy is not flowing well then

[2:34] this communication is blocked then all

[2:37] the time you're feeling this discomfort

[2:40] eventually accumulative discomfort or

[2:44] stress manifesting as pain as pain so in

[2:49] chicken no matter how difficult might be

[2:54] house wise especially pain preventing as

[2:58] farm so the movement

[3:00] certain connection with different part

[3:02] of the body and yet in chicken we can go

[3:06] beyond these physical limitation by

[3:09] walking with energy so we learn to move

[3:12] the body slowly gently yeah and with the

[3:18] purpose of opening the energy flow so in

[3:22] the beginning you're walking with the

[3:24] pain you're with gentle movement so

[3:26] instead of who feel limited yeah often

[3:30] when fear the pain we stop moving then

[3:33] energy continue stagnate block more over

[3:37] the time so the condition getting worse

[3:39] and worse

[3:40] instead of healing the pain healing the

[3:42] cause of the pain so by going to the

[3:45] energy yeah you can go beyond the

[3:47] physical limitation even beyond the pain

[3:51] the extreme discomfort of the pain able

[3:55] to open in the energy so the key is

[3:58] doing gradually slowly mindfully and

[4:03] intentionally connecting with energy so

[4:06] just here with a few examples you can

[4:09] start practicing for yourself so one

[4:14] example is walking with a neck problem

[4:16] neck pains so the movement is like this

[4:21] yeah you're initiating movement from the

[4:23] egg and your Ching so tucking the chain

[4:26] slowly gradually continuously then

[4:32] lifting the chain up

[4:34] so in this movement you're opening the

[4:38] front of the neck then gradually moving

[4:41] forward then were in were in to just

[4:48] continue lifting your chin upward slowly

[4:53] from the base all the way up feeling the

[4:58] front of your neck opening up forward

[5:03] down

[5:04] were in were technician then you'll

[5:09] appear in the movement reversing the

[5:12] direction forward up and tuck your chin

[5:20] moving the chain down were the opening

[5:24] the back of the neck continuously

[5:27] forward back upward one more tucking

[5:34] your chin moving the chin down we're the

[5:37] opening in the back of a net

[5:39] continuously for up back tuck your chin

[5:45] then relax so gonna demonstrate side

[5:51] away side away that's just standing up

[6:00] so again taking a chain moving the chain

[6:04] up work continuously all the way up and

[6:09] forward down were in were taking your

[6:16] chain next to it continue moving the

[6:18] chain upward again the intention is

[6:21] opening the front of your neck full up

[6:24] and continuously forward down were in

[6:30] were touching next three reversing the

[6:34] direction by moving the chain down we're

[6:37] into just four up back tucking a chain

[6:44] moving the chain down

[6:46] you're opening the back of neck

[6:50] continuously moving chin forward upward

[6:54] backward tucking a chain one more time

[6:59] moving the chain down we're into the

[7:02] chest forward upward backward next trick

[7:09] relaxed noticing noticing

[7:26] so that's the movement you can do

[7:29] repeating as often as many times as you

[7:33] want

[7:34] opening the energy of the necks and

[7:38] releasing the pain but also creating

[7:41] more flexibility in your neck area which

[7:44] is so important for health in general

[7:47] and that's where the brain connecting

[7:51] down work slow the entire nervous system

[7:53] with the entire body and that's where

[7:56] all the breathing go deeper slow

[7:59] respiratory system and also that's where

[8:03] you go slow you know

[8:05] the digestive system eating the food as

[8:07] well speaking so same time the neck

[8:11] vertebra is connecting not only the

[8:13] entire spine but also corresponding

[8:17] different part of the body and often the

[8:21] neck has issue when different part of

[8:23] the body started to have problems health

[8:28] problems often manifest in the neck area

[8:31] so their corresponding kind of as a body

[8:34] map and so for the low back and there's

[8:38] many practice available from Qigong

[8:41] tradition opening the low back areas and

[8:44] just want to cheer when especially if

[8:47] you have extreme paying already and you

[8:50] can do this movement while you're

[8:52] sitting why are you sitting so simply

[8:56] about just low Teddy in the hip yeah low

[8:59] tating think of your low back kind of

[9:02] locating slowly creating this horizontal

[9:06] movement circular movement and the key

[9:11] is pay attention concentrate internally

[9:14] mindfully moving slowly mindfully when

[9:23] you're feeling too much pain you want to

[9:26] slow down the movement also softening

[9:31] the movement

[9:37] then reverse the movement slowly livers

[9:40] in the movement so again think of your

[9:44] low back rotating in a small circle

[9:48] small circle it can also concentrate on

[9:59] the entire spine singly enticed by is

[10:03] kind of horizontally rotating and you

[10:08] Lading

[10:22] slow down the movement again you can

[10:24] leap II that as often as many time as

[10:28] you need the key is connecting to the

[10:32] low back connecting with energy use very

[10:35] gentle movement deeper mind

[10:39] concentration to activate opening energy

[10:42] so in the beginning you may feel some

[10:46] level of intensity of discomfort and

[10:48] pain over the time the energy opens up

[10:52] energy start to flow to connect

[10:55] different part of the body again able to

[10:58] move slow the spine the nervous system

[11:00] the muscle tissue in the area and then

[11:04] then not only you're reducing heal the

[11:07] pain but also more importantly you're

[11:10] free up in the energy to enhance the

[11:13] health overall health of a entire body

[11:16] so instead of the energy is blocked

[11:19] suppressed now the energy is available

[11:22] for health for healing for your

[11:24] creativity for life vitality so that is

[11:29] a few simple example you can do anytime

[11:32] as often as many time as you can

[11:37] how la la la always well and getting

[11:42] better

[11:51] you

Qigong addresses pain as blocked energy (qi) rather than a purely mechanical problem. While physical therapy stretches and strengthens muscles, qigong uses slow, intentional movement combined with breath and mental focus to restore energy flow through the nervous system and affected tissues. This energetic approach aims to heal the underlying cause of pain, not just manage symptoms.
Yes. The low back rotation practice, for example, can be done while sitting and modified to use very gentle, small movements even when pain is acute. The key is to move slowly, soften the movement if pain increases, and maintain deep mental concentration on opening energy rather than forcing physical movement. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting.
These practices can be done daily and repeated as many times as needed throughout the day. Begin with 5–10 minutes and listen to your body. Consistency is more important than duration; regular, mindful practice over weeks and months typically shows the greatest benefit for reducing chronic pain.
The neck is a central junction connecting the brain, spine, nervous system, and the pathways for breathing and digestion. When neck energy is blocked, it restricts the flow through these vital pathways. Opening the neck through qigong therefore improves respiratory function and supports the digestive system by restoring energy flow to these interconnected systems.
In the beginning of practice, you may feel a heightened sensation or discomfort in the affected area as dormant energy begins to move through previously blocked regions. This is distinct from sharp injury pain and typically decreases over time as energy flow improves. If pain worsens or becomes acute, slow down and soften your movement, or consult your healthcare provider.
No. Wisdom Healing Qigong is complementary to professional medical care, not a replacement. Always consult your healthcare provider before beginning qigong, especially if pain is severe or you have a diagnosed condition. Qigong works best as part of an integrated approach that may include medical treatment, physical therapy, and other healing modalities.
