The Secret Of Attraction:Understanding Love & Magnetism

Deepak Chopra
Deepak Chopra
Oct 19, 2013
7 min de lecture

This meditation-focused teaching explores the nature of attraction through the lens of consciousness and energy. Rather than treating attraction as a surface-level phenomenon driven by appearance or circumstance, the work presents attraction as a magnetism rooted in inner state, awareness, and intentional presence. The teaching integrates contemplative practice with the premise that to attract love and connection, one must first cultivate the qualities and consciousness one seeks to draw in.

What Is Attraction Beyond Physical Appearance?

Attraction is commonly understood as an immediate, involuntary response to physical beauty or external charm. However, a deeper exploration reveals that true magnetism operates at the level of consciousness and energy. This framework suggests that what draws people together transcends surface qualities and involves a resonance of being—the alignment of inner states, emotional frequencies, and states of awareness.

When we examine attraction through a contemplative lens, we shift from asking "What makes someone attractive?" to "What makes someone magnetic?" The difference is subtle but significant. Physical attractiveness may capture initial attention, but magnetism—the sustained ability to draw others in and create meaningful connection—emerges from inner qualities: presence, authenticity, peace, vitality, and the capacity to make others feel valued in one's attention.

How Does Consciousness Shape Who We Attract?

A central premise in understanding attraction is that consciousness operates as a magnet. The state of awareness we inhabit, the thoughts we hold about ourselves and others, and the emotional frequency we emit create a field that attracts or repels others. This is not mystical thinking but rather an observation about how people respond to presence, confidence, and emotional availability.

If someone is inhabiting anxiety, self-doubt, or desperation, others sense this state and often respond by withdrawing. Conversely, if someone is grounded in self-acceptance, peace, and genuine curiosity about others, they create an environment of safety and attraction. The inner state literally becomes broadcast through body language, tone, gaze, and the quality of attention we offer.

This principle suggests that to attract love, one does not need to change one's appearance or manufacture a persona. Instead, the work involves cultivating the inner states that naturally magnetize: peace, confidence, generosity of attention, emotional resilience, and a sense of aliveness. When someone is truly present—not performing, not anxious, not seeking validation—their presence itself becomes attractive.

What Role Does Meditation Play in Attracting Love?

Meditation serves as a foundational practice for shifting one's state of consciousness and thereby one's capacity to attract. Through regular meditation, the mind settles, emotional reactivity decreases, and a deeper sense of peace emerges. This quieting of mental turbulence has profound effects on how we show up in the world and how others experience us.

Specific meditation practices designed for love and attraction work with intention, visualization, and the cultivation of specific emotional states. These practices might involve:

  • Centering awareness on the heart center and generating feelings of compassion, warmth, and openness
  • Visualizing oneself embodying the qualities one seeks in a partner—presence, kindness, authenticity
  • Working with the belief system around worthiness and deserving, releasing blocks to being loved
  • Cultivating gratitude and abundance consciousness, which shifts one from scarcity to receptivity
  • Developing witness consciousness—the ability to observe one's own patterns without judgment

The purpose of these practices is not to magically attract someone, but to align one's inner world with one's intentions. When the mind is less cluttered, the emotions less chaotic, and the heart more open, a person naturally becomes more available for genuine connection. Others sense this availability and respond.

What Does It Mean to "Be" the Love You Seek?

A paradoxical principle in attraction work is that the faster way to attract love is not to chase it, but to embody it. This means cultivating within oneself the qualities, presence, and emotional maturity one hopes to find in a partner. If you seek someone kind, begin practicing kindness. If you seek someone peaceful, begin cultivating inner peace. If you seek someone fully present, practice presence in your daily interactions.

This is not about faking or pretending, but about genuine inner development. When someone has worked on themselves—developed emotional intelligence, healed past wounds, cultivated self-compassion, and learned to be a good listener—they naturally attract others who have done similar work. People at similar levels of consciousness tend to find each other.

Additionally, when you embody the qualities you seek, you become less dependent on others to provide them for you. You are no longer seeking a partner to "complete" you or rescue you from loneliness. Instead, you are seeking to share your aliveness with another equally alive person. This shift in orientation is profoundly attractive because it moves from neediness to genuine offer.

How Does Energy and Presence Influence Attraction?

Energy—understood as the vitality, aliveness, and coherence of one's being—is a significant factor in attraction. A person full of energy, humor, curiosity, and passion is inherently more magnetic than someone depleted, shut down, or going through the motions. This is not about being loud or extroverted; introverts can be deeply energized and compelling. It is about being alive in one's own experience.

Presence—the quality of being fully available in the moment—is equally magnetic. When someone speaks to you and you are truly listening, fully present, not already thinking about your response or distracted by your phone, they feel seen. This recognition of their existence is deeply attractive. People are drawn to those who make them feel alive and important through genuine presence.

Both energy and presence can be cultivated through practice. They emerge naturally from consistent meditation, physical movement, creative engagement, and the decision to be fully committed to one's own life rather than waiting for someone else to make life meaningful. A person engaged in their own growth, their own work, their own joy, is inherently more attractive than someone passively waiting for love to arrive.

What Is the Role of Self-Love in Attracting Romantic Love?

Self-love is foundational to attraction, not as narcissism or self-centeredness, but as genuine self-respect and self-care. When someone loves themselves—takes care of their body, honors their needs, pursues their interests, maintains boundaries—they send a signal to others: "I am worth loving." This signal is contagious; others begin to believe it too.

Conversely, when someone is self-critical, neglectful of their own needs, and seeking external validation to feel worthy, others sense this and often either exploit it or withdraw from it. There is an unconscious wisdom in human connection: we are drawn to people who know their own value, because it suggests they will also recognize and honor ours.

Self-love also means releasing the need for a specific person or a specific timeline. It means trusting that you are worthy of love regardless of circumstance, and that if you cultivate the inner qualities that create magnetism, genuine connection will follow. This trust paradoxically makes attracting love easier, because it removes desperation from the equation.

Can You Attract Love Through Intention Alone?

Intention is powerful, but it works best when combined with action and inner alignment. Setting an intention to attract love—getting clear on what you actually want in a partner and relationship—is a useful first step. It focuses the mind and prevents scattered energy. However, intention without corresponding inner work and presence is unlikely to yield results.

The most effective approach combines clear intention with meditation practice, genuine self-development, and practical action. This might mean getting involved in communities aligned with your values, engaging in activities you enjoy where you might meet compatible people, working with a therapist or coach to heal relationship patterns, and continuously practicing presence and authenticity in all interactions.

Intention, in this view, is not about manifesting a specific person through willpower, but about aligning your consciousness and your actions with the relationship you want to create. When your inner state, your behavior, and your circumstances are all aligned with your intention, attraction happens naturally.

Where to go from here

The teachings on attraction point toward a practical spiritual path: cultivate your own peace, presence, and aliveness. Develop the inner qualities you seek in others. Practice meditation to quiet the mind and open the heart. Release desperation and trust in your worthiness. Engage with life fully, not waiting for someone else to make it meaningful. These practices do not guarantee a specific outcome, but they ensure that you become the kind of person who naturally attracts genuine connection—and more importantly, someone who is already living a full, meaningful life before anyone joins it.

Meditation quiets mental turbulence, reduces emotional reactivity, and creates inner peace—qualities that naturally magnetize others. Specific love meditations cultivate heart-centered awareness, visualize embodying desired qualities, and release blocks to being loved. A calmer, more present person becomes naturally more attractive and available for genuine connection.
Rather than searching for someone to complete you, develop within yourself the qualities you want in a partner—kindness, presence, authenticity, emotional maturity. This approach shifts you from neediness to genuine offer, and attracts others at a similar level of consciousness and development.
Intention is useful for clarity, but the real work is inner alignment. Instead of trying to manifest a specific person, focus on becoming a magnetic, fully alive person through meditation, self-development, and authentic presence. This attracts genuine connection rather than forcing a particular outcome.
People are drawn to those who respect themselves, maintain boundaries, and pursue their own interests. Self-love signals worthiness; high energy and genuine presence make you inherently more magnetic. Both communicate to others that you are alive, available, and worth knowing.
Physical attractiveness may capture initial attention, but magnetism—sustained ability to draw others in—emerges from inner qualities like presence, authenticity, peace, and vitality. Magnetism operates at the level of consciousness and energy rather than appearance alone.
When you are fully present with someone—genuinely listening, not distracted, making them feel seen—they experience being alive in your attention. This recognition is deeply attractive. Presence can be cultivated through meditation and the commitment to be fully engaged in your own life.
