Rise Above Social Conditioningto Heal Divisions

Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle teaches that interpersonal divisions—the rifts that separate us from one another—arise from deeply embedded social conditioning rather than from genuine incompatibility. When we can observe and rise above these conditioned patterns, rather than identifying with them as our core identity, the boundaries that seemed immovable begin to dissolve. This shift requires moving beyond the automatic thoughts, beliefs, and reactive behaviors that society has installed in our minds, revealing a more fundamental shared humanity beneath the surface divisions.

What Are Social Conditioning Patterns and How Do They Create Division?

Social conditioning refers to the learned behaviors, beliefs, and identities we absorb from our environment—family, culture, religion, politics, media, and peer groups. From childhood onward, we internalize these patterns until they feel like our authentic self. We are conditioned to identify strongly with certain groups, ideologies, and worldviews, and equally to define ourselves against others who hold different conditioning. This creates a psychological fortress: "People like us are good, smart, moral; people like them are wrong, dangerous, or foolish."

The problem is that when we operate entirely from conditioned identity, we cannot truly encounter another person. We encounter only their conditioning, and we react from our own. A man conditioned to see himself as a member of one political tribe will automatically dismiss ideas from the opposing tribe, not because he has genuinely engaged with those ideas, but because his conditioning has taught him they are invalid. A woman raised in one religious tradition may feel inherent discomfort with those from another, even before any real conversation occurs. These divisions feel real, inevitable, and deeply personal—but they are scaffolding, not bedrock.

How Does Identifying With Conditioning Lock Us Into Separation?

When we fully identify with our social conditioning—when we say "I am a Democrat," "I am a Christian," "I am a member of this race or class"—we fuse our sense of self with a label and the belief system attached to it. This fusion is the mechanism of division. It means that any challenge to the belief system feels like a threat to our very existence. We defend the conditioning as if defending ourselves, because we have lost the ability to distinguish between the two.

From this fused state, genuine dialogue becomes impossible. We do not listen to understand; we listen to rebut. We do not see the other person as a separate consciousness having their own legitimate experience; we see them as a representative of an opposing category. The other's words are filtered through our conditioned judgment before they even fully land in our awareness. This automatic filtering prevents the real encounter that might dissolve the division.

Tolle's teaching points to a radical possibility: what if the divisions we experience are not between different *kinds* of people, but between different degrees of *conditioning*? What if, beneath all the labels and belief systems, there is a fundamental human consciousness that is not divided at all?

What Does It Mean to Rise Above Social Conditioning?

Rising above conditioning does not mean rejecting all social learning or pretending to neutrality. Rather, it means developing the ability to observe your conditioned patterns without complete identification. You notice: "I am having the thought that this group is wrong," rather than "This group *is* wrong." You recognize: "I was taught to believe this," rather than "This is the truth." This small shift—from identification to observation—creates space.

In that space, a choice becomes possible. You can still hold your values, beliefs, and perspectives. But you hold them more lightly. You recognize them as perspectives, not absolute truths. You become aware that the person across from you was taught with equal certainty that their perspective is absolute truth. This mutual recognition of conditioning—"We have both been heavily programmed"—can be the beginning of genuine meeting.

Rising above conditioning also means connecting to a level of consciousness or awareness that is not constructed by society. This might be called presence, inner stillness, or the observing awareness that witnesses all thoughts and emotions without being those thoughts and emotions. When two people meet from this level—not from their conditioned identities but from this deeper presence—the division softens naturally. They are no longer two opposing belief systems; they are two human beings, both temporarily imprisoned in conditioning, both capable of waking up to something more fundamental.

How Does This Shift Dissolve Interpersonal Divisions?

When even one person in a relationship or conversation manages to rise above their conditioning, the dynamic changes. If you stop reacting automatically to the other person's conditioning and instead respond from a place of presence and clarity, the other person often senses this shift. They may not understand it intellectually, but they feel that something is different. The usual escalation pattern—I react to your conditioning, which triggers your defensive conditioning, which strengthens my resistance—breaks down.

This does not mean you agree with everything the other person says, or that you abandon your values. It means you can disagree without the disagreement being contaminated by the emotional charge of identification. You can hold your position without needing to make the other person wrong to prove yourself right. This distinction is crucial: you can have boundaries and clear values *without* creating psychological division.

As more people in a community, family, or society develop the capacity to observe their conditioning rather than be possessed by it, a collective shift becomes possible. Divisions do not disappear because everyone suddenly believes the same thing. They diminish because people stop deriving their identity and security from being right and others being wrong. The neurotic quality of division—the desperate clinging, the rage, the dehumanization—subsides when it is no longer fueled by identification.

Where to Go From Here

If Tolle's teaching resonates, the practical entry point is simple: begin noticing your own conditioned patterns in action. In conversations or when encountering opposing views, pause and observe. What automatic thoughts arise? What emotional charge accompanies them? What group identity are you defending? This observation is not judgment; it is clarity. The moment you can see the conditioning clearly, you are no longer entirely controlled by it.

Second, experiment with brief moments of presence—stepping back from thought and connecting to simple awareness of the present moment. Even thirty seconds of genuine presence can interrupt the momentum of conditioned reactivity. From this space, old divisions look different. They appear less solid, less personal, more like patterns that were installed rather than revelations of truth.

Finally, recognize that rising above conditioning is not a solitary achievement. It is deeply relational. Your capacity to see beyond division is activated and deepened when others do the same. Seek out people, teachings, and communities that support this waking up. In the presence of someone not fused with their conditioning, the possibility of your own freedom becomes tangible. This is how healing of divisions actually occurs—not through argument or policy change alone, but through the gradual awakening of consciousness in individuals, which then creates a new frequency in their relationships and communities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Social conditioning installs learned beliefs and group identities that we fuse with as our core self. When we fully identify with these conditioned patterns, we automatically dismiss or judge those with different conditioning, making genuine encounter impossible and division feel inevitable.
Changing beliefs through argument rarely dissolves division because the division itself is rooted in identification with conditioning, not in the content of beliefs. What shifts division is people developing the capacity to observe their conditioning without identifying with it, which allows real dialogue to occur.
You can hold clear values and perspectives while remaining aware they are perspectives, not absolute truths. Identification means fusing your identity with beliefs so completely that any challenge feels like a personal threat, making you reactive and defensive rather than grounded.
Presence is awareness that stands apart from conditioned thought and emotion. When two people connect from this level of presence rather than from their programmed reactions, the emotional charge of division naturally diminishes and genuine meeting becomes possible.
Yes. When one person stops reacting automatically and instead responds from presence and clarity, the other person often senses this shift. The usual escalation pattern breaks, and the dynamic changes even if both people do not hold identical beliefs.
No. Rising above conditioning means holding your beliefs and values without deriving your sense of self from them being right and others being wrong. You maintain clarity and boundaries without the defensive emotional charge that creates psychological division.
