[1:05] good to see you there those who uh
[1:09] somehow don't know who you are we
[1:12] are chatting with dummy oris and barbara
[1:15] emers
[1:17] for those of you who don't even know
[1:18] that miguel is the one with the hat
[1:20] and barbara is the one without the hat
[1:23] and
[1:23] my name is aaron and we're here to talk
[1:27] about their new book the actor
[1:31] and we're gonna be doing this for four
[1:33] weeks a little book series
[1:35] uh jumping into various aspects of the
[1:37] actor
[1:39] and uh today we're going to focus on the
[1:41] beginning of that book
[1:42] um talk about the artist a couple other
[1:44] things
[1:45] and see where we go from there and uh
[1:48] before we start i just want to let
[1:49] everyone know those who are watching
[1:51] live
[1:52] feel free to comment in the chat
[1:55] section and if you have any questions
[1:57] you want to ask
[1:58] barbara or miguel feel free to ask those
[2:01] questions in the chat and hopefully
[2:03] we'll get a chance to ask a few of them
[2:04] later
[2:06] so that being said uh we can
[2:10] jump into something so
[2:13] thanks for joining this morning and
[2:16] doing this
[2:17] oh this is our pleasure yeah mine too
[2:21] and uh it's you know it's been a while
[2:23] since i had a chance to talk to
[2:25] both of you together so this is kind of
[2:26] that's right nice little treat
[2:29] so you know one thing i i found
[2:32] interesting about this book that i'll
[2:33] mention right off the bat is
[2:35] there was a line in there that said
[2:39] that this book is not necessarily about
[2:40] becoming a better actor
[2:42] but becoming a better human being and i
[2:45] know when i saw the title about the
[2:46] actor i thought the whole book was
[2:48] gonna sort of be instructions not become
[2:51] a better actor but
[2:52] it really is um
[2:56] sort of not just a template but a really
[2:58] magnified
[2:59] investigation about how to become the
[3:02] best
[3:03] human that you can be if that makes
[3:06] sense
[3:07] and that's what i loved about this book
[3:09] so much is that there's so much to talk
[3:11] about
[3:12] and if we start at the beginning talking
[3:14] about artists
[3:17] you know everyone let's see for me
[3:21] when i think about artists i think about
[3:22] painters and writers and actors i think
[3:24] about
[3:25] musicians but the one art that we
[3:28] all share is performing
[3:31] and i found that so interesting that you
[3:33] break down
[3:35] everyone as an artist because everyone
[3:37] performs
[3:38] and i was curious to see if you can talk
[3:40] a little bit about
[3:45] that
[3:53] well to your first point about not
[3:56] necessarily
[3:57] being a better actor
[4:00] what we want is ultimately in every
[4:03] teaching
[4:04] find our way back to authenticity which
[4:07] is
[4:08] the truth of us without the pretense
[4:11] without the performance and in order
[4:14] to do that we need to establish that we
[4:16] have been
[4:17] trained to perform since we are very
[4:20] small
[4:21] uh in order to survive as whatever our
[4:24] species is we have to mimic
[4:26] the uh the ways and the behaviors
[4:30] of the people around us the you know
[4:33] other animals in our in our
[4:36] uh herd or whatever species we are
[4:39] and uh and become like
[4:43] the rest of the species and of course
[4:45] that's what we do and it's not just
[4:46] about learning language and how we use
[4:48] language
[4:49] before language we're learning to mimic
[4:52] and
[4:53] this is a wonderful thing because it
[4:54] helps us to survive
[4:56] and to ultimately um
[4:59] you know sort of get the ground rules
[5:01] for being a human being
[5:04] in the process of course we keep that
[5:06] mimicry or that
[5:09] mentorship uh
[5:12] activated throughout our lives usually
[5:15] into adulthood and maybe into the rest
[5:17] of our lives
[5:18] when if we kind of wake up and see the
[5:22] whole picture we can see oh wait i was
[5:24] taught to act like this i was talk to
[5:25] react like this
[5:27] which is what acting is mostly about how
[5:30] you react to things
[5:32] and uh and maybe i can be a little
[5:36] more spontaneous authentic in the moment
[5:40] i can stop having reflexive actions
[5:43] and reactions and take in
[5:46] the whole truth of a moment
[5:50] which is far beyond what we're trained
[5:52] by society to do
[5:54] we're trained by society kind of just to
[5:56] fit in
[5:57] so this all helps us through childhood
[6:01] but it doesn't necessarily make us more
[6:03] authentic human beings
[6:05] once we've passed childhood we're still
[6:08] we still have the voices in our heads of
[6:09] our
[6:10] parents and where you know they blurt
[6:13] right out
[6:14] uh and we wonder what was that voice why
[6:17] did i say that it doesn't really feel
[6:19] natural to me
[6:20] and and this is why so it's kind of
[6:23] important to know
[6:24] why you're acting why you're so good at
[6:26] it
[6:27] and then sort of experiment with
[6:31] what is it that i am you take an artist
[6:34] like
[6:34] anybody any famous artist picasso or
[6:37] monet
[6:38] and i'm sure they started their careers
[6:41] sort of trying to fit in and do what
[6:44] their
[6:45] masters did or the people they admired
[6:48] did
[6:49] you know resemble that kind of art and
[6:51] gradually with experimentation
[6:53] they became you know their own kind of
[6:56] artist with their own kind of style
[6:58] even at the risk of being rejected by
[7:01] the community the artistic community and
[7:04] that's essentially what
[7:06] we're asking you know you to do and what
[7:09] we've all
[7:10] uh been practicing certainly since we
[7:13] entered this teaching
[7:15] aaron and i were devoted
[7:19] apprentices to a master and
[7:22] little by little we begin to trust our
[7:24] own style and our own way of
[7:26] speaking and messaging and that's
[7:30] the best we can do uh
[7:33] the best we can contribute to society is
[7:36] our authenticity
[7:38] the best we can gift we can give
[7:39] ourselves is our authenticity
[7:41] and all artists are
[7:44] trying to find the truth
[7:48] that's what they have in common you know
[7:51] what is
[7:51] amazing is that
[7:55] we don't even need to learn
[7:59] to be an actor or artist it comes
[8:03] directly from our dna
[8:07] and not just us also the animals
[8:11] here everything that exists really
[8:16] we don't need to learn to perform or
[8:18] anything like that
[8:21] it's just in us
[8:24] you know the whole world was waiting for
[8:28] us to arrive
[8:31] you know before we was born
[8:34] the entire society already exists
[8:39] the rich deported justice violence
[8:42] everything
[8:43] exists before we arrived
[8:48] but it was a magical moment
[8:52] when mother knows she was pregnant
[8:58] that have a big effect in the little
[9:01] society that is the family
[9:04] and they prepare a stage for us to
[9:06] arrive
[9:08] everybody was waiting and for many years
[9:12] they didn't know
[9:12] if the new world would be male or female
[9:16] not enormous right away
[9:20] but they're just waiting for as soon as
[9:23] we was born
[9:25] we grab everybody's attention and they
[9:28] celebrate
[9:29] everything whatever we do or we don't do
[9:33] they even uh for us
[9:37] put words in our mouth and we just acted
[9:41] like a newborn
[9:45] then like a boulder toddler
[9:50] it was extremely important when we
[9:53] learned
[9:54] a language
[9:57] where we started having a conscious of
[10:00] what we are
[10:02] when we create our very first
[10:05] script how we adapt
[10:08] to the stage the stage keep shifting as
[10:13] we was growing
[10:14] up also it was
[10:17] so beautiful to see the development
[10:20] of the leader actor or actress
[10:26] like barbara say a little before we
[10:29] mimic everybody around us
[10:32] we hear voices
[10:35] and we practice very soon we try to
[10:39] say what mother father brother
[10:43] sister says we see attitudes
[10:46] and we imitate attitudes
[10:50] but like i said before even before we
[10:53] learn to speak
[10:54] we start doing touches we we
[10:57] wish that everybody understand what they
[10:59] want
[11:01] and we becomes a very
[11:05] impressive actor or actress
[11:09] and then our teachers
[11:13] start telling us the way we should act
[11:17] they give rules but we have to follow
[11:20] the rules
[11:21] and at the very beginning we really
[11:24] didn't care about those rules
[11:26] because we really didn't understand what
[11:28] they want us to do
[11:32] but when we have enough knowledge then
[11:35] we start learning the consequences of
[11:37] whatever we do or we don't do
[11:41] but we still was performance performing
[11:44] in our own personal way
[11:48] i performed to becomes miguel
[11:53] it really is the only one that i can be
[11:56] i cannot be anybody else
[11:58] i can try to live with like somebody
[12:00] else i can do a very good invitation
[12:04] but no i cannot be anybody else
[12:09] but and say with all of you
[12:12] you only can be you whatever you are
[12:17] you can imitate elvis presley or
[12:20] kennedy whoever but you are imitated
[12:23] and you know they are doing that
[12:29] if we when we becomes a kind of
[12:31] professional
[12:32] actor or artist we imitate the
[12:36] characters
[12:37] of that script
[12:41] but in our
[12:45] everyday life we are performing to the
[12:48] script that we create because
[12:51] we create a story with the producer the
[12:54] director
[12:55] the main actor or artist and we fulfill
[12:59] the script with all those secondary
[13:01] characters
[13:02] with device we interact
[13:06] then we don't even know him we becomes
[13:09] a great actor or a great actress
[13:12] the best industry that we create
[13:16] the best in our story and we can act in
[13:20] any way we can be the shy one the angry
[13:23] one
[13:24] the jealous one and even more
[13:28] interesting
[13:29] even without knowing
[13:32] we were different masks
[13:36] different faces we project an image of
[13:39] ourselves
[13:41] in the way we want to be perceived by
[13:42] others
[13:45] but there's a big fear that we all have
[13:51] the critics because everybody
[13:55] will create an image of us and they will
[13:58] want to control our performance
[14:00] they tell us the way we should perform
[14:04] they tell us all the mistakes we do
[14:06] etcetera etcetera
[14:08] but there's a lot of opinions all around
[14:10] everybody tells you what you are
[14:12] and what you should be the way you have
[14:14] to behave
[14:15] but we create that
[14:19] great magic that we try to please
[14:22] everybody
[14:24] and we create an image of ourselves
[14:28] and this is what we perform okay we have
[14:31] all of our life playing the role
[14:35] changes uh the um the performance
[14:40] in whatever
[14:44] wherever we are like a we present
[14:47] something different when we're working
[14:50] when we are teaching we are having fun
[14:52] in a romantic relationship
[14:54] we change faces we are polyphasic right
[14:58] and we don't know we are active
[15:02] but just by nature we are acting all the
[15:05] time
[15:07] and by trying to be what everybody told
[15:09] us that we
[15:10] we should be we lose the authenticity
[15:13] little by little
[15:16] because we want to
[15:20] uh be accepted
[15:23] by all those critics without knowing
[15:26] that the biggest script that we have is
[15:29] ourselves
[15:31] the way we judge ourselves about our
[15:33] performance
[15:34] the way we should actually react if we
[15:38] have courage to be afraid
[15:41] if we were accurate or not if we were
[15:44] ridiculous
[15:45] and only we know that
[15:49] if we are so afraid that we will
[15:52] sacrifice ourselves
[15:54] in order to be accepted but everybody
[15:57] are not asked
[15:59] and especially to be accepted
[16:03] for ourselves
[16:06] but maybe they come
[16:10] when we discover that they're acting all
[16:14] of our life
[16:16] and we try to be accepted by the
[16:21] majority
[16:22] we try to perform
[16:25] and sometimes we don't like the role
[16:29] that they give to ourselves
[16:35] for whatever reason but when you're
[16:38] aware that you're acting
[16:40] that can change the whole thing because
[16:42] now
[16:44] you can see that you have some power
[16:48] in the script that you're playing the
[16:50] world as you're playing the story that
[16:51] you're playing
[16:55] because you no longer sacrifice yourself
[16:57] for others
[16:58] but you start doing the way you want you
[17:01] want to be
[17:04] they just are recovering little by
[17:06] little authenticity
[17:09] then you also discover
[17:13] that everybody around you they are also
[17:16] acting but they don't know
[17:20] that even professional actors and
[17:22] actresses
[17:24] when when they're not acting
[17:26] professionally
[17:27] they don't know they're still acting
[17:29] well
[17:30] sometimes they will know all day more
[17:34] but not too many for sure
[17:37] you can see how important is to see
[17:39] yourself
[17:41] as an actor of actress because
[17:44] we can decide what
[17:47] we will play and also very important is
[17:51] to see that the stench is changing all
[17:54] the time
[17:56] and as an actor or artist we have to
[17:59] adapt to
[18:00] every change that exists at this stage
[18:05] and the biggest example that i give all
[18:07] the time
[18:08] is that over at
[18:12] jericho we used to have
[18:15] certain stage that we are comfortable
[18:17] with
[18:18] and all of a sudden the stage changed
[18:20] completely
[18:23] the way we live our life changed
[18:25] completely
[18:28] and what we resist we make everything
[18:32] more difficult
[18:34] but when we adapt to the new way of life
[18:38] in this new scenario
[18:43] life becomes so easy even
[18:46] we can take advantage of whatever
[18:49] changes is happening around us
[18:54] and it's very important to understand it
[18:57] to see yourself
[18:59] as an actor or artist because
[19:02] we can not avoid to act
[19:06] not even when you're alone
[19:10] because we keep acting acting the way we
[19:13] think we
[19:14] are i'm still acting
[19:17] like miguel even this is just
[19:20] an english and identity
[19:27] but i'm still active
[19:32] first well
[19:36] i'll let aaron take the next well
[19:39] what i was gonna say is you know as
[19:40] you're talking and as i was reading the
[19:42] book too
[19:43] i was having memories of being a child
[19:46] and i remember
[19:48] clearly uh being so grateful to be alive
[19:52] you know and not understanding what this
[19:55] world was about
[19:56] and thinking if i watch other people and
[19:58] study other people
[20:00] that maybe i can learn about what i'm
[20:03] supposed to do
[20:04] so i remember like watching my parents
[20:05] and watching my friends and seeing how
[20:07] they dressed and seeing what they wore
[20:08] and how they spoke
[20:10] yes and i saw all these reactions and i
[20:12] wanted to avoid reactions i saw so
[20:14] clearly
[20:15] that if i modify myself i can avoid
[20:18] you know reaction i can avoid getting in
[20:19] trouble i can avoid
[20:22] judgment and it seemed to make sense to
[20:25] me as a
[20:25] as a child to do that and then 10 years
[20:28] later
[20:29] in my late teens i remember looking in
[20:30] the mirror seeing all the acne and the
[20:33] hair and the clothes and
[20:35] wondering who is this person in that
[20:37] mirror
[20:38] i don't recognize this person anymore
[20:40] where is that child that was so happy so
[20:42] curious about life where was
[20:44] where's that child that was so enamored
[20:46] by the mystery
[20:48] now there's this person in the mirror
[20:49] looking back at me
[20:51] that's perfected the art of avoiding
[20:54] judgment
[20:55] perfected the art of um
[20:58] not taking risks perfected the art of
[21:01] you know of avoiding every interaction
[21:03] how did i become so masterful of that
[21:05] and forget
[21:06] the mystery and so that put me on a
[21:10] personal journey you know and and
[21:12] thankfully i've had a lot of
[21:13] conversations with you guys about that
[21:16] but i think
[21:17] the beautiful thing is is that mystery
[21:19] the mystery
[21:21] that we're searching for in life
[21:22] sometimes we're searching outside of us
[21:24] for that mystery not realizing that the
[21:26] mystery is just that missing
[21:29] authenticity
[21:30] it's the truth it's what we
[21:34] as artists are seeking all the time and
[21:37] of course we go into some strange little
[21:39] you know side roads and back alleys to
[21:41] find it
[21:42] but uh you know miguel makes
[21:46] a point of just saying that awareness is
[21:49] seeing things as they are
[21:50] but of course we've been you know we've
[21:53] been offered so many filters in the
[21:55] in forming our minds and our viewpoints
[21:59] about reality that
[22:00] it it's almost impossible to do that uh
[22:03] without a lot of practice
[22:05] i i maintain that it takes less practice
[22:08] to start seeing things as they are than
[22:10] it did
[22:11] to start you know creating these
[22:14] illusions
[22:14] for ourselves in the course of a
[22:16] lifetime you're describing a child
[22:19] the child that you were is pretty alert
[22:22] to be able to stand back and say
[22:23] what is this picture there's something
[22:25] wrong with this picture and i think
[22:26] it's me i think it's the way i've sort
[22:29] of
[22:30] fabricated an image of myself and i
[22:32] don't relate to that
[22:33] image and of course
[22:37] we're changing and we're evolving as
[22:39] human beings all the time
[22:40] and our perception is evolving our
[22:42] brains are evolving
[22:44] but our images don't seem to evolve the
[22:47] image we're projecting onto the
[22:49] world so that's a fantastic things to be
[22:52] aware of early in life
[22:55] for me it was you know deciding i wanted
[22:58] to be
[22:58] an actress i mean a professional actress
[23:03] coming out of school and
[23:06] i don't think it i think it took me a
[23:08] few years of acting professionally on
[23:11] television to finally realize
[23:13] the joy it gave me was that i had
[23:16] at best but still i had a few
[23:20] minutes in every performance to be as
[23:23] honest as i could possibly be uh given a
[23:27] character given a fake situation
[23:29] given i did a lot of soap opera so given
[23:32] you know really absurd melodrama
[23:36] i could still find a few seconds or
[23:39] minutes
[23:40] of interacting with another human being
[23:42] that felt as honest as possible
[23:45] and then i began to put two and two
[23:47] together when i walked off the
[23:50] soundstage or whatever and onto the
[23:52] street i realized i don't get this in
[23:54] life
[23:55] i don't get those two minutes uh
[23:58] i'm back to being barbara which is what
[24:02] my parents want me to be
[24:03] or the barber that my boyfriend wants me
[24:06] to be
[24:06] or the barber that you know an old
[24:08] friend from high school wants me to be
[24:10] um and without even knowing it i'm
[24:13] playing those roles
[24:14] and i can't wait to get back in front of
[24:16] the camera or on stage
[24:17] where i get those few minutes of truth
[24:19] again you know
[24:21] in a very fabricated and artificial
[24:24] situation
[24:25] i can find the truth the human truth in
[24:28] just speaking dialogue that was written
[24:30] for me
[24:31] but give it my full truthful and honest
[24:34] expression
[24:36] and once i figured that out and got
[24:39] a little bit better at it acting
[24:42] professionally stopped being as
[24:44] um exciting or as stimulating to me
[24:48] because i began to see okay wait uh
[24:50] there's other ways for me to do this
[24:52] and i'm right i'm you know
[24:56] reciting other people's lines and i'm no
[24:59] longer afraid of the camera i'm no
[25:01] longer afraid of the truth
[25:03] and so let me pursue it in ways that
[25:07] suit me
[25:08] better and you know so it goes from that
[25:11] to
[25:11] writing poetry or uh
[25:15] you know eventually finding somebody
[25:18] to say you know awareness is a pretty
[25:22] simple thing once you get rid of all
[25:23] those lies you're telling yourself
[25:26] or somebody like don miguel reese who is
[25:30] reflecting the truth back at you all the
[25:32] time even though you don't really want
[25:33] to see it
[25:34] um even though it kind of disturbs you
[25:37] like the truth is
[25:38] as he said to me once you're a great
[25:39] actress and this was a time in my life
[25:42] where
[25:42] acting was you know 10 15 20 years
[25:45] behind me
[25:46] and i took it as an affront
[25:49] why are you calling me an actress people
[25:51] who perform
[25:53] uh when i'm being so sincere i'm being
[25:56] so
[25:56] real in this moment and um
[26:00] of course he wasn't big on detailed
[26:03] explanations
[26:04] but that rankled me so much that i had
[26:07] to sort of
[26:08] finally begin to figure out yeah
[26:11] even when i'm being at my most sincere
[26:13] i'm being
[26:15] barbara trying to seem authentic
[26:18] and you know that could discourage
[26:21] uh an apprentice or it could drive them
[26:24] further
[26:25] towards uh truth and awesome
[26:27] authenticity
[26:28] whatever that means but we know what
[26:30] we're doing
[26:31] is lying to ourselves even when we're
[26:34] alone
[26:35] uh in the dark uh we're lying to
[26:37] ourselves
[26:38] uh we're lying about who we are who we
[26:40] need to be
[26:41] we're still in our heads pleasing people
[26:44] that are no longer in our lives perhaps
[26:46] uh we're trying to be what our mentors
[26:49] were so we find
[26:50] other teachers and mentors and then we
[26:52] try to be like them
[26:54] and we can put it all down and say i've
[26:57] learned a lot from the people who
[26:59] you know i admire in life uh
[27:03] but that's not getting me to the truth
[27:05] of
[27:06] what i am not just what my image is
[27:10] a better image than i had at 20 or 30.
[27:14] but the truth of what i am is life in
[27:18] form
[27:18] in a human body uh
[27:22] situated very strangely in the dream of
[27:25] humanity
[27:26] which is a whole you know
[27:29] performance in itself everybody trying
[27:32] to imitate everybody else
[27:34] so how does that translate how does that
[27:38] translate in every minute of
[27:42] human behavior human interaction in the
[27:45] words we speak
[27:47] that's the great fun and experiment of
[27:50] it
[27:50] let me see what it is not to react to
[27:53] something
[27:54] and just look at it look at the
[27:56] situation listen to what people are
[27:58] saying
[27:59] and how they're performing uh you know
[28:02] that
[28:03] miguel taught us and repeated this over
[28:06] and over again for years that we're
[28:08] dreaming
[28:10] uh we're dreaming because we're making
[28:12] impressions of what's going on
[28:14] uh we have each of us has our own
[28:16] impression of what's going on in reality
[28:19] but it's kind of a dream because it's
[28:21] all impressions it's all interpretations
[28:24] uh and the same is with performance
[28:26] we're
[28:27] acting all the time this is how we
[28:29] interpret
[28:30] what we need to do in order to connect
[28:33] with people better
[28:34] uh this is what we need to do in order
[28:37] to
[28:37] you know get a better uh position in
[28:40] society
[28:42] and that's important but know that this
[28:45] is a performance
[28:46] and know that you can let go of the
[28:48] performance you can
[28:50] not step away from the stage because the
[28:51] whole world is a stage
[28:53] but you can separate yourself from that
[28:56] character whatever it is you think in
[29:00] the moment
[29:01] and and be as honest
[29:04] and as enthusiastic
[29:08] about just a truthful moment you know
[29:10] those two a day
[29:12] as you can until that becomes a habit
[29:15] uh the reflex response is not the habit
[29:18] the habit is
[29:20] what is the truth here uh this person is
[29:22] trying to con me or this person
[29:24] really wants me to you know uh
[29:28] be as impassioned or as enthusiastic or
[29:31] as angry as they do
[29:32] what is my truth how do i respond to
[29:34] this and why should i
[29:36] get caught up in the melodrama because
[29:39] realize it or not we're all
[29:40] in our own little soap opera or we're in
[29:43] somebody else's soap opera which is
[29:44] extremely uncomfortable
[29:47] and just realizing these things makes it
[29:50] easy to see what we don't want to do
[29:52] and uh when we get in the habit of
[29:55] saying no that's not the way
[29:57] i want to react to life to you to myself
[30:00] to this situation
[30:02] uh then uh spontaneity becomes sort of a
[30:06] just in back what it was second nature
[30:09] first nature
[30:10] as miguel says it's dna it teaches us to
[30:13] mimic
[30:14] in order to survive this is uh you know
[30:17] as natural as can be but at some point
[30:20] uh we're grown up enough and independent
[30:23] enough and strong enough on our own to
[30:25] be able to make discerning choices
[30:27] about our behavior and our responses to
[30:30] everything
[30:33] awesome i have a question yes
[30:36] from someone uh her name is danielle i
[30:40] believe
[30:41] and i'm i'm sure hi
[30:44] i'm sure we'll get into this at some
[30:46] point but her question is
[30:48] and i'm guessing this is in regard to
[30:50] the book the actor but
[30:51] she says it seems self-awareness is only
[30:54] one part of the process
[30:56] what do we do with this new awareness
[31:03] now
[31:05] well i'm not sure what process we're
[31:07] talking about
[31:08] um well let me well go ahead
[31:13] is this a process or is this life and
[31:15] evolution
[31:16] and miguel wants to answer that
[31:21] okay tell me the question okay i can
[31:24] make an interpretation
[31:25] this is just my interpretation but let's
[31:28] say
[31:28] uh it seems self-awareness awareness
[31:31] that
[31:31] we that we're uh performing a role
[31:35] or the awareness that we're fulfilling
[31:38] what do we do with that awareness now
[31:40] okay awareness
[31:42] is the first step in order to
[31:45] change the performance that
[31:48] we that that we are playing
[31:52] in order to also change the stage
[31:55] the role because we do all that without
[31:59] awareness all of our life
[32:01] but once that we're aware now we can see
[32:04] that we have the power
[32:06] to change whatever we are doing
[32:11] we cannot keep doing whatever the same
[32:14] way
[32:15] and keep sacrificing ourselves in order
[32:18] to
[32:18] to us to be accepted but inspired by
[32:22] society
[32:23] the way they want us to be or we can say
[32:27] no thank you i will i i will do
[32:30] what i want to do right now i don't have
[32:32] to sacrifice myself
[32:34] for you before anybody else
[32:38] no we can let go then
[32:41] and the next step is rearrange the stage
[32:46] we arrange the way we see life
[32:50] in in the beginning will not be that
[32:53] easy
[32:54] because everybody want to control the
[32:57] way we act
[32:59] they're used to to see us to sacrifice
[33:02] ourselves in certain ways
[33:04] that when we no longer want to sacrifice
[33:06] anymore
[33:07] they start getting upset with us
[33:11] and take it personally but
[33:15] awareness is a very important part in
[33:18] order
[33:19] to transform what
[33:22] we believe we are which means
[33:25] to return to be authentic
[33:31] that answer the question i think that i
[33:34] think that answers the question
[33:36] and uh i think we lost barbara maybe her
[33:39] ipad
[33:42] let's see if she logs back in yes
[33:46] so um i mean we're approaching the end
[33:48] of this conversation
[33:49] but i but i do find it interesting like
[33:51] with awareness
[33:53] um you know if we're aware that we're
[33:56] performing these roles
[33:58] and we're aware that we're pretending to
[33:59] be something that we're not
[34:02] then we have the chance to to change
[34:05] that
[34:05] we have a chance to yeah like you said
[34:07] to find that authenticity
[34:09] and be more like the our real us
[34:12] ourselves
[34:12] instead of trying to pretend to be
[34:13] something for somebody else
[34:16] you know awareness is a whole master
[34:19] mm-hmm
[34:21] yes to be aware you know
[34:24] you say a wonderful world
[34:28] a little before you mention
[34:31] [Music]
[34:33] mystery
[34:35] well the biggest mystery that we have in
[34:38] our life
[34:39] is ourselves because we
[34:42] don't know what we are we
[34:45] only know what we what we believe we
[34:49] are what we wish to be we know
[34:52] what everybody tell about us but
[34:55] we really don't know what we are this is
[34:59] the biggest mystery
[35:01] then the whole uh when we reveal all
[35:04] those mysteries
[35:06] the last one to reveal will be oh
[35:09] this is what i am you find
[35:12] what you are and you also find that
[35:15] there is no words to explain what you
[35:18] are then awareness is a whole mystery
[35:21] another big mystery is transformation
[35:25] that you start changing everything
[35:28] as soon as you are aware well even
[35:32] before awareness everything is changing
[35:34] anyway all the time
[35:36] but you are not aware of that
[35:37] transformation
[35:39] in the other mastery is
[35:42] what we call mastery of intent which is
[35:44] nothing but
[35:46] mastery of life mastery of
[35:49] energy that is shifting and changing
[35:51] everything
[35:52] but yes awareness is extremely important
[35:55] it's about mastery
[35:56] and without that awareness we really
[35:58] don't go anywhere
[36:01] uh with our consciousness we just live
[36:04] our life the way it is
[36:05] and we never know why we are the way we
[36:08] are
[36:09] in a certain point perhaps it's not that
[36:11] important but
[36:13] it's important for the ones who are
[36:16] looking
[36:17] to find themselves to be
[36:21] what they are completely authentic
[36:25] you know it kind of makes me think that
[36:28] the roles we play is really about
[36:31] control
[36:32] we're trying to be become predictable to
[36:34] ourselves in a way
[36:36] because if we're predictable to
[36:37] ourselves then we kind of anticipate the
[36:40] way that we're going to react
[36:41] we anticipate the way someone else is
[36:43] going to react and that predictability
[36:45] makes us feel
[36:46] you know safe but if we're unpredictable
[36:50] then we can't con we feel out of control
[36:53] because we can't control ourselves
[36:55] and so there was something i read in the
[36:58] book about
[37:00] if you're afraid of a truth then you'll
[37:03] never
[37:04] really understand the mystery of you
[37:08] well uh even if we don't want to
[37:14] uh life is rebuilding
[37:17] every story step by step and sometimes
[37:21] many misters at the same time
[37:24] that a certain point can look
[37:26] overwhelming
[37:27] when is when we think is too much
[37:32] but what is
[37:35] really important is
[37:38] to see that we are much
[37:42] more than what we believe we are
[37:47] and yes the acting
[37:52] we feel safe in us
[37:55] in the in the way that we know in
[37:58] when a mystery comes
[38:02] we face a mystery and it is no longer a
[38:05] mystery
[38:07] it becomes uh something that we
[38:10] know every single day because very
[38:13] familiar
[38:15] that it stopped being a mystery but
[38:17] every time that we go in at different
[38:18] directions
[38:19] we will find different mysteries
[38:23] in fact uh this is this uh the actor is
[38:26] the very first book
[38:28] of a group of at least four books that
[38:31] together we call it
[38:33] the mystery school at the historic
[38:36] school
[38:37] we can say that we have only one teacher
[38:42] that is teaching the main character of
[38:44] our story
[38:46] and that teacher is life itself
[38:50] life is revealing one by one
[38:54] all the mysteries
[38:58] that they use other people to reveal
[39:02] those mysteries like they use our
[39:04] parents
[39:05] they use our teachers they use
[39:09] the entire society to start revealing
[39:12] all those mysteries
[39:17] you know like
[39:20] the first time that out of your home
[39:24] that you go to mystery school is the
[39:26] elementary school
[39:28] you have no idea what's it what what
[39:30] you're gonna find there
[39:33] and they reveal the secrets to you
[39:36] one by one you learn
[39:40] to read math
[39:44] you learn all the tools that will help
[39:47] you
[39:48] to survive in society
[39:53] and it is uh
[39:56] in this series of work that we start
[39:58] creating right now
[40:00] with the other
[40:04] errors
[40:07] the myth
[40:11] we are that intertwined
[40:15] in that is guiding us willing
[40:19] to discover the biggest mystery which is
[40:23] ourself
[40:24] to find out everything that we are not
[40:28] in all the different directions in life
[40:33] and only stay what we are
[40:37] like in acting we find out
[40:40] all the all the performance that we did
[40:43] that
[40:43] it was not really authentic
[40:47] all but we are not start going away
[40:51] and only what is free but is to
[40:54] stay with us and the same with love and
[40:57] the
[40:57] other directions that they're writing
[40:59] books right now
[41:02] they don't really encourage everybody to
[41:04] keep
[41:05] temple of revealing those mysteries
[41:09] to find by the end what you really are
[41:15] i think i don't know if i will even
[41:17] answer that
[41:24] um there is another question should we
[41:25] just do one more question
[41:29] let's do one more question um from
[41:33] barbara
[41:35] she says good morning so sometimes i get
[41:38] confused
[41:39] on making judgments or trying to figure
[41:43] out how to act
[41:44] in a certain group i think
[41:48] i think it might be difficult to ask
[41:49] questions sometimes in a in a forum like
[41:51] this i'm going to have to make an
[41:52] interpretation of
[41:53] i have to make an interpretation of this
[41:55] question but um
[41:57] i i would say someone's asking
[42:01] uh it seems like they're having
[42:02] difficulty acting in a particular type
[42:04] of group so maybe it's a group they're
[42:05] not familiar with
[42:06] um i'm gonna guess so when you're
[42:09] interacting with people you don't know
[42:10] for example
[42:12] how do you get comfortable in a
[42:14] situation that
[42:15] you're totally unfamiliar with
[42:22] oh hold on barbara you are
[42:29] muted
[42:31] we don't hear you
[42:36] there we go are you hearing me now no
[42:39] okay um
[42:43] you know what we forget to do in life is
[42:45] just to be there
[42:46] to listen uh we forget to exercise
[42:51] the thing that's most authentic about us
[42:53] which is
[42:55] our presence our being the fact of our
[42:58] humanity
[42:59] uh we want to come in with a um
[43:02] i don't know uh sometimes i joke a lot
[43:05] about we
[43:06] enter a room with an alibi we enter a
[43:08] room with a story we enter a room with
[43:10] uh
[43:11] an idea of ourselves that we think is
[43:13] going to play better for this particular
[43:16] audience
[43:16] and if we don't know the audience if
[43:18] we're not familiar with the company
[43:20] of course that is going to make us very
[43:23] insecure
[43:24] um the the whole you know cliche about
[43:28] dreaming that you're naked and
[43:30] you lost your script and you don't know
[43:31] the lines and everybody's talking and
[43:34] you don't know
[43:34] when you're supposed to speak that's you
[43:36] know a typical human anxiety
[43:39] but it's an anxiety born of you know
[43:42] having to enter a room having to
[43:46] be in a situation as a character and we
[43:48] forget that
[43:49] we are first and foremost life in the
[43:52] form of a human being
[43:54] and really all life has to do is enter
[43:56] the room
[43:57] when you were a baby that's all you did
[44:00] you entered a
[44:01] situation you entered a a community
[44:04] a little tribe of human beings and they
[44:06] were delighted with you
[44:08] because all you were was life a perfect
[44:12] representation of life kicking and
[44:14] screaming and doing all those things
[44:17] but you weren't trying to be something
[44:20] you weren't trying to perform at that
[44:22] point
[44:23] or present yourself as something that
[44:25] you are not
[44:26] uh what i find most attractive about
[44:30] miguel ruiz
[44:31] is that he gives the perfect reflection
[44:34] no judgment
[44:35] no you know preconceived ideas
[44:39] um and that's what we're all looking for
[44:42] just a perfect reflection and what
[44:44] better way to do that
[44:46] than to look to listen to appreciate
[44:49] and to be in the presence of other human
[44:52] beings
[44:53] as a human being as a representation of
[44:55] life
[44:56] in its pure potential and that takes
[44:59] another kind of way of thinking and
[45:01] another kind of practice
[45:03] but uh basically we're going back to
[45:05] where we started
[45:07] we have all this knowledge we have all
[45:10] this experience
[45:11] but we can be babies in that sense that
[45:14] we're just
[45:15] here delightful and seeing everything as
[45:18] love including ourselves
[45:22] i think that's you know uh when we go to
[45:27] a reunion with people that we
[45:30] don't know
[45:34] there is a mystery there we need to be
[45:37] revealed
[45:38] we don't know the people that people
[45:41] don't know
[45:42] us but you already know we are actor or
[45:45] actress that's what we know and we also
[45:49] know that we decide to be there we
[45:52] decide to go with these people
[45:55] and we are going
[45:58] to learn something there or to
[46:02] teach something there or both
[46:06] we got to learn and to teach
[46:09] because a mystery will be revealed to us
[46:13] we're gonna meet people that we didn't
[46:15] know before
[46:17] we don't know how they are they uh
[46:20] introduce themselves now we know
[46:22] something about that
[46:24] some mysteries start being developed
[46:26] there is revealing and
[46:28] and you are reacting to
[46:32] those mysteries and then
[46:35] you start exploring you are asking
[46:39] and you ask to know more about
[46:43] wherever you are and then you want to
[46:46] have
[46:46] an emotional reaction you can be
[46:50] comfortable or uncomfortable
[46:54] in any at any moment you can make
[46:57] decisions what you're gonna do there or
[46:59] not
[47:01] if you are not comfortable and you don't
[47:04] want to be there
[47:06] you can say well i'm sorry but i'm gonna
[47:10] live or whatever
[47:12] then only you know that because you are
[47:16] the actor of the actress
[47:18] who decide to be part in that reunion
[47:22] and to know these people as you do
[47:24] they've done before
[47:26] once you know that you can start feeling
[47:27] more comfortable as you can start
[47:29] opening more
[47:31] open more to share or to receive
[47:34] because you have no idea how they will
[47:37] react to whatever you do
[47:39] they don't know you have you don't have
[47:41] idea how they're gonna react to your
[47:43] performance
[47:44] it's gonna be accepted or not
[47:47] but you have to be aware that the the
[47:50] main critic is yourself
[47:54] if you push yourself to do some uh a
[47:56] great performance you want to do that
[47:59] but also if you push yourself to be a
[48:02] certain kind of performance
[48:04] that's going to happen also
[48:07] then you have the responsibility
[48:10] to every action or reaction that you
[48:14] have
[48:15] in any situation in your life
[48:19] but is when you don't you're acting and
[48:22] you know
[48:23] that everybody in in that group are also
[48:26] active
[48:27] even if they don't know you have a big
[48:30] advantage
[48:31] because you can start seeing actions and
[48:33] reactions
[48:35] and well you can take certain kind of
[48:37] control
[48:39] of whatever situation is there
[48:42] i don't know if i'm making any sense but
[48:45] it makes a lot of sense and it actually
[48:47] sort of mitigates a lot of the fear that
[48:50] arises when you're in a situation so
[48:52] it's a beautiful perspective
[48:54] so i appreciate that um
[48:57] there's one last comment it's not a
[48:59] question but someone's writing
[49:01] please tell damiel today all of us on
[49:04] the chat love him
[49:06] and are eternally grateful for him so
[49:09] just wanted to share that love and oh
[49:12] that was for me
[49:15] okay
[49:18] so i think i said let's wrap it up 10
[49:21] 50 and you know we have three more
[49:25] meetings
[49:25] and i'm sure we will explore other
[49:28] avenues
[49:29] on the other discussions so i just want
[49:31] to thank you guys so much for taking the
[49:32] time
[49:34] to chat and talk about the actor and i
[49:37] don't know if there's anything else you
[49:38] want to say before we close but
[49:40] i just want to go ahead yes i i will ask
[49:44] them to well once they read the book
[49:47] if they have any questions related to
[49:50] that book
[49:52] uh doubts that they have about that book
[49:55] please let us know and we can win that
[49:58] duration
[49:58] also because
[50:01] we want to take the best of this for
[50:04] this group
[50:05] as we can and share it the best we can
[50:14] i thank everybody for joining us i thank
[50:16] you miguel and aaron
[50:18] and uh i guess we'll pick this up again
[50:20] next week
[50:21] we will pick this up again next week and
[50:23] i'll remind everyone to please

[50:31] barbara and
[50:32] miguel about those questions so read the
[50:34] book this week
[50:35] and next week we will dive into some new
